Before you operate a CMV again
NOT PROHIBITED in the FMCSA Clearinghouse does not necessarily mean your Alabama CDL is already valid. Do not operate a commercial motor vehicle merely because the Clearinghouse displays NOT PROHIBITED. Confirm that ALEA received the status change, complete the required Alabama reinstatement transaction and any CDL reclaim process, resolve any medical-certification or other suspension issue, and confirm that ALEA shows your commercial privileges as valid before operating a CMV requiring a CDL.
What happens after your Clearinghouse status changes?
After the directly observed Return-to-Duty test is reported and your Clearinghouse status changes to NOT PROHIBITED, ALEA says it receives the changed status within about 45 minutes on average. Use the ALEA CDL Helpdesk listed in the State Reference Helper to confirm that ALEA has received the update before completing the state transaction.
What should you do next?

- Make sure no other Alabama or out-of-state suspension prevents reinstatement.

If you kept your CDL
$150
The Clearinghouse-related reinstatement fee is $150. After ALEA receives the status update, you confirm receipt and pay the fee. If no other licensing issue remains, the CDL can return to valid status; no credential-reclaim transaction is required.
If you surrendered your CDL
$100 + reclaim costs
The Clearinghouse-related reinstatement fee is $100, but that payment does not complete the credential process. You must visit an office in person, ask to reclaim the CDL, and pay the new-CDL cost plus a separate $25 reclaim processing fee.
If you surrendered your Alabama CDL
ALEA's August 11, 2026 example for a Class A CDL was $66.25 for the new CDL plus the $25 processing fee, or $91.25 to reclaim the credential. That $91.25 reclaim cost is in addition to the $100 reinstatement fee.
ALEA advised that surrendering the CDL may make restoration more expensive overall and generally recommended retaining it unless you need another identification document because the original CDL expired or was lost.
Medical certificate requirements
A valid medical certificate is required when it applies to your intended commercial operation. If the medical certificate already on file remains valid, ALEA says you do not need a new medical card merely because of the Clearinghouse reinstatement. An applicable government-driving or excepted category may change the requirement. Ask ALEA to verify your medical-card status at an ALEA office or through the CDL Helpdesk listed in the State Reference Helper.
Other suspensions must be cleared
A NOT PROHIBITED status does not override a separate driver-license problem. Any other Alabama suspension or out-of-state suspension must be cleared before ALEA will complete the Clearinghouse reinstatement or allow a surrendered CDL to be reclaimed.

Because the recommendation must be based on the individual’s circumstances, the type, provider, and cost cannot be known in advance.
