If you did not make a credential change during the downgrade and did not drop the CDL, Michigan receives and processes the Return-to-Duty/Clearinghouse update. Once processed, the CDL status is automatically reinstated. You do not need to visit a Secretary of State branch solely to restore the Clearinghouse-related CDL status.
You dropped the CDL
If You Had the CDL Removed While Prohibited
If you obtained a corrected credential without the CDL during the downgrade, you must return to a Michigan Secretary of State branch after Return-to-Duty to have the CDL privileges re-added to the credential. Standard correction fees apply.

This is an update-receipt cycle, not a guarantee that every CDL will be restored within three hours.

Michigan provided these approximate standard correction-fee examples for a credential-correction transaction:
- Standard Operator, base license only: approximately $9

Do you need a branch appointment?
If you need a branch visit to have CDL privileges re-added, plan to make an appointment. Michigan SOS says branches are appointment-based, although staff may accommodate someone arriving without an appointment depending on availability.
Do you need Return-to-Duty documentation?
No extra documentation is required specifically for this RTD restoration process because the Clearinghouse transmits the Return-to-Duty status directly to SOS. This does not eliminate normal identification or documentation requirements for a separate renewal, credential, medical, or other transaction.
Other issues can change the Michigan process
Clearinghouse restoration does not resolve every issue affecting a Michigan CDL. Michigan SOS says medical-certification problems, license expiration or renewal, and certain qualification or testing issues—including hazardous-material or air-brake requirements—can create additional steps depending on the driver's record. Why is education or treatment separate?
DOT requires the SAP to determine the appropriate education or treatment individually after the initial evaluation. Because the recommendation must be based on the individual’s circumstances, the type, provider, and cost cannot be known in advance.
